DIY-Topsy Turvey Garden

You have all seen those neat topsy turvey planters right? Well I am going to show you how to make your own. It is crazy simple.

Here is what you need:

1 Bucket at least 2 gallons

1 hole saw drill bit

1 drill

1 plant (Tomato, pepper, squash)

Dirt

Here is all you have to do.

1. Turn your bucket over and drill a hole in the bottom. I used a 1 1/2 inch hole saw.DSC03127DSC03129

2. Turn your bucket over on it’s side and insert your plant from the inside out by carefully threading your leaves of the plant through.

3. Now with some help turn your bucket right side up and fill with dirt. I top mine off with some mulch to help keep it moist, and that is it. See super simple and will only cost you about $2.00 for your bucket, free if you have one around the house.

Optional Glamour

I decorated mine with vinyl and my cricut because that is how I roll, but it is entirely optional. I think my tomatoes like to be glamorous they grow better! They make a fun gift if you personalize the bucket. I made one for my mom last year and she loved it. She got a ton of tomatoes!

And just one more little hint. This year I planted basil and cilantro in the top, so I will let you know how that goes!

Enjoy!

  1. Wow that is great! 2 Questions...is the second photo a peper plant? & Do you need any other holes for drainage?
    Thanks for the great idea.

  2. Alison:

Yep that is a pepper plant, you can do all kinds of things upside down. No you don't need any extra drainage holes, any excess water will flow out the hole where you planted your plant.
